Intro

About

In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

Memory

Old building between partitions restored in 1925. The rehabilitation forms an architectural ensemble with the new façade of the parish church, to which it adjoins at right angles. It consists of a ground floor and two floors and a gable roof. On the first floor two balconies open, with a sundial between them, and on the top floor there is a gallery. In this project, Folguera was inspired by the classic models from Italy. The surface of the façades of the two buildings was graffitied.

Chronology

  1. Church of Sant Sadurní d'Anoia

    autoria desconeguda

The church of Sant Sadurní is located in the oldest part of the town. Along with the rectory building, it has a Latin cross plan, with three naves and a transept with a hemispherical dome. The apse is rectangular with two side chapels and the bell tower is octagonal in section, with gargoyles. This bell tower is made with ashlars arranged with "opus quadratum". Some gargoyles are preserved on the edges of the upper part. The roof is made of Arabic tiles. The new façade is made in neo-Brunelleschi noucentista style with sgraffitos. It has a pediment with a triangular gable and is preceded by a portico of semicircular arches on colonnades. It forms a unitary architectural complex with the rectory house. Inside there is a set of polychrome wall paintings, located on the upper part of the central chapel of the head and on the middle wall of the right-side chapel. The latter represents the scene of the Last Supper; inside an architectural interior and behind a table is Christ with the communion wafer in his hands, and the disciples are located at a distance from him on both sides. They are all are dressed in tunics. The first scene remains unidentified, but it is related to the apotheosis of the Virgin. The beginning of construction dates from the 12th century. 1101 seems a likely date of consecration of the primitive Romanesque chapel. It has been documented since 1129, and then throughout the 12th and 13th centuries it is known to be under construction. On March 23, 1567, the parish of Sant Sadurní obtained permission to enlarge the church. Surely in this period the Romanesque work was demolished and the Gothic building and the bell tower (with the date "1606") were built, which is the only one that is still preserved from that time. The new church was blessed in 1705, and work continued throughout the following centuries (which was reflected in the lack of architectural unity). The tabernacle and stands were built in 1795. At the beginning of the 19th century, the portal, the new choir and the organ were built. In 1883, the interior was completed with the Latin cross plan resulting from the addition of the transept with a dome. The church was renovated externally in the years 1924-1927 in a noucentista style, adding the current façade with its corresponding portico. The architect F. Folguera directed the work, and the sgraffitos were done by the painter J. Busquets. It was refurbished again in 2003.
