El Palauet
Arata Isozaki & Asociados España, Arata Isozaki
On an almost flat plot with a trapezoidal floor plan, Isozaki traces a circle 66 metres in diameter and inscribes a square. The circle is divided into two equal parts: one is an outdoor area and the other the pavilion itself. The rectangular garden outside corresponds with the indoor sports court. Isozaki recovers the original idea of Palau Sant Jordi on the roof: an undulating plan supported exclusively by the ends. It is a shape that combines a lowered vault on the perimeter band and a half dome in the central area. The complex surface is resolved with a spatial mesh supported horizontally on the perimeter of the covered enclosure, and in the vertical plane formed by the diameter of the circle, it is solved a glazed wall that absorbs the metal bars of a lattice beam. The roof plan folds in three points oriented to the north, leaving slits that allow natural light in.1990 - 1996

Some books and a dream... The building is a construction in a garden… It does not keep any memory Of the institutional nature of libraries. ….They are walls that perhaps were in this place. We have been trying through different paths To give the library a maze type of gravity. A series of rooms and gardens assembled in a non-linear way. The building is an experiment that uses each development of the project… Its continuous changes and variations, As well as the authority to accept the result… Just a curiosity: The Isozaki Sports Palace is Our neighbour. And Palafolls, led by its mayor Valentí Agustí, is building a city where he asks us architects to build according to our dreams.1997 - 2007

La Figuerassa Sports Complex
Alcolea+Tárrago Arquitectos, Rubén Alcolea, Jorge Tárrago
The project competition required covering a pre-existing concrete track of 40x22 meters using a solution that made it possible, in successive phases, to close the space partially or totally. The project proposes a clear answer structurally, providing character and economically optimising the intervention. The track is covered with a total length of more than 44 metres and with supports only at the short ends. The most refined construction details are avoided to rely on architectural scale and economy. The materials are simplified to two: translucent polycarbonate, which covers the front and faces the sea; and aluminum sheet. After the execution of the sports court, a volume of glass is added to include some small changing rooms and service spaces.2006 - 2007
