Intro

About

In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

  • Biblioteca Popular del Vendrell

    Ramon Puig Gairalt

  • Brisamar House

    José Antonio Coderch de Sentmenat

    Brisamar House

It is a single-family house located in an urbanisation next to Coma-ruga beach, intended for tourist use. The house adapts to the dimensions and ordinances of the plot and is resolved according to the typical scheme of arranging the living and dining rooms on the ground floor and the bedrooms on the upper floor, providing it with terraces and covered outdoor spaces, both on the front and back, more sheltered and private for the development of summer activities. The functional and formal features of the author are clearly distinguished in its balanced volumetry, in the austerity in the use of materials and in the arrangement and resolution of the exterior openings with the use of a special closing for solar protection and darkening. The observable changes with respect to the project, probably accepted by the author, are worth mentioning, consisting of the suppression of a small front body intended for showers and the extension of the upper terrace to the most advanced front façade. You can also see the addition of external stairs for access to the terraces on the first floor.

  • Sajuca House

    Agustí Borrell i Calonge

    Sajuca House

It is a house intended for a second residence of 377 m2, surrounded by a garden, located on a plot on the seafront at one end of the promenade that borders the Coma-ruga beach, forming part of an urbanisation with an obvious tourist character and summer leisure. It is worth noting the forcefulness of its parallelepiped main volume and the resolution of the functional program by locating the living rooms on the ground floor and the bedrooms on the upper floor, all of them well oriented towards the sunlight and the best views. These rooms are preceded by a large terrace designed as a two-level pergola with plant elements covering the highest, to which the five double bedrooms located on the upper level have access. The geometric purity of the building, resolved in brick walls painted in white, enhanced by the distinguishable rhythm marked by the metallic porticoes of the green pergola support and the fit and relative position of the various living and service rooms enhance its quality as a distinguishable piece within the framework of the canons of the modern movement.

  • L'Olivera Building

    José Antonio Coderch de Sentmenat

    L'Olivera Building

Built close to the Girasol building in Madrid, this is one of the first works in which Coderch applies the recessed plan typology in the form of a comb, which will be developed in subsequent larger-scale actions in the housing complexes for Urquijo Bank and of the Garages of Sarrià in Barcelona. The building is developed in three bodies of four heights and two apartments per floor, all of them oriented towards the south and the sea. The location, quite far away from the coastline, and the relative density of the urban area within the area of tourist use where it is located, allow the adoption of criteria similar to those of the blocks in urban planning, both in the building typology and in that of the apartments, with a living-dining room, terrace, three bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom and laundry room, identical to that of the conventional residential unit. The large terraces that cover the entire width of the living areas stand out, as well as the provision of communal outdoor space with gardens and a swimming pool, elements typical of the complex's holiday destination and second home. The austere treatment of the façades – all of them made of exposed brick with windows of the same size – which incorporate fixed glass in the sill area to increase the light in the bedrooms, accentuates the powerful volumetry of the building and the author's characteristic formal canons.
  • Stella Maris House

    Enrique Delso Calavia

    Stella Maris House

It is a residence located on the seafront of a tourist urbanisation on the Mediterranean coast. The resolution of the building stands out for its adaptation to the unique location of the plot in one of the corners of the promenade that runs along Coma-ruga beach, forming a pronounced curve with one of the cross streets with a steep slope. The building, with a considerable surface, visually emphasizes this singularity with the railing of the terrace on the upper floor and generates a set of volumes with a clear predominance of the horizontal component, showing a marked reference to works of organicist architecture. This reference can also be seen in the organisation of the functional program, which generates differentiated areas for living, sleeping, service and study rooms, following the pattern set by the outer perimeter of the plot, which prioritises where it is needed versus the strict orthogonality of the spaces. An open landscaped space located in the central back of the house acts as a visual reference that unites the various areas. The large terraces with sea views located in the front parts of the main rooms take advantage of the dominant maritime location of the building.

  • Arístides Maillol House

Ricardo Pérdigo Nárdiz, Tomás Rodríguez i Coll

    Arístides Maillol House

The house adapts to the slope of the land through the fragmentation of floors in different planes and the generation of volumes at different heights, with green roofs visible from the inside. Additionally, with the aim of integrating into the place, the floors of the house are resolved by wrapping the existing vegetation elements, and giving them a priority value. The different units of the houses are arranged in such a way as to make the most of the views and the sunlight. Most of the openings to the outside are concentrated on the southeast façade, with angled windows to make the most of the sea views. The complex resolution of communications allows for diversified routes that link the various areas while guaranteeing a certain independence. The materials used are the usual ones in the area: brick masonry in the walls and interior divisions and forged joists and flat girders supported by brick walls. The greenish colour of the façades and vermilion of the wood carpentry, with a special closing, distinguishes the house with respect to the closest environment.

  • Elevated tank in El Vendrell

    Enric Ventosa Serra

    Elevated tank in El Vendrell

Located near the beach of San Salvador (El Vendrell), a new elevated tank of 285 m³ was designed to supply water to the summer population on agricultural land, next to the train track, in 1966. The population was then estimated at about 5,000 inhabitants, amid the expansion of new buildings for second tourist homes. The reservoir had to be filled by gravity in a first phase and it was planned, in a second phase, to be connected to a much larger buried reservoir when the progressive increase in population made it necessary. Its author, Enric Ventosa Serra, was an engineer from the Provincial Council of Tarragona, the entity in charge of managing the facility, and author of numerous infrastructure works for very diverse uses, although no other works with a profile similar to that of this deposit. It is a 31.5-metre-high construction made up of a foot with five arms of 22 m arranged in a star, with a growing plan dimension as it rises, resolved in perforated ceramic brick that serves as lost formwork for the reinforced concrete that supports the upper tank, also made of reinforced concrete. The lower part is spherical whereas the lateral part is frustoconical with a diameter that increases in height. Inside the base and the tank there are stairs for maintenance operations.

  • Hortal House

Guallart Architects, María Díaz, Vicente Guallart

    Hortal House

    Escola Bressol Creixem Jugant
