Intro

About

In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

  1. Manlleu Municipal Market

Colomer-Rifà, Comas-Pont Arquitectes, Ramon Colomer i Ordeig, Jordi Comas i Mora, Anna Pont i Armengol

    Manlleu Municipal Market

  2. New Marta Mata School

Comas-Pont Arquitectes, Jordi Comas i Mora, Anna Pont i Armengol, Marc Rifà Rovira

    New Marta Mata School

In contrast to a very heterogeneous environment, an aesthetically neutral building is conceived. A homogeneous and white skin, like a shell, covers the entire exterior of the building; only where it folds inward do yellow interstices appear, a reflection of the luminosity and warmth inside. The building makes it possible to articulate two distinct urban plots: the garden city with single-family homes and a new residential area of large blocks. This is developed in an L shape, with a bar on the ground floor parallel to the only urbanised street, C/Torre Esteper (which includes a gym, kitchen, dining room, library and administration) and a bar in the first floor, parallel to the street provided for in the new planning (which contains the children's classrooms in the main floor and primary classrooms in the first one). As the focal point of all the spaces, a large double-height lobby concentrates both the access to the children’s area and the primary school and serves as a connection area with the administration, the services and the outside courtyard itself.
  3. Osona Psychopedagogical Medical Centre

Comas-Pont Arquitectes, Jordi Comas i Mora, Anna Pont i Armengol

    Osona Psychopedagogical Medical Centre

The services for the care of people with mental illnesses are unified in this building, which is composed of the repetition of a spatial unit 6 metres wide with variable length. An economically and energy-efficient construction system, the domestic staircase and the warmth of the interior spaces, along with the close relationship between the building and nature, make it a healthy building. Around a central access pavilion, the rest of the pavilions are grouped with their specific programmes, adapted to the land's topography and separated by orchards and gardens. The use of a single cladding material for the roof and façades contrasts with the use of natural materials such as wood and cork for the interiors. An economical, modular and highly energy-efficient construction system has been proposed, allowing the building to adapt to energy demand according to occupancy and external climate conditions, using passive systems like the ventilated roof or the greenhouse-porches on the south-facing façades.

    El Petit Miquel School

Located in the building of the Vic Seminary, listed as an Asset of Local Interest, the austere and monumental spaces of the building are transformed into more flexible and domestic teaching spaces. The classrooms communicate physically and visually with each other and also open onto the corridors, allowing them to be used as new learning spaces. The sequence of visuals, the natural light, the use of natural materials such as wood or ceramics and the acoustic improvement of the spaces help to achieve the desired feeling of comfort. The renaturalisation of the inner courtyard of the building is achieved by removing part of the old concrete sports court to introduce draining paving and vegetation. The waste from the demolition of the court is used as a base for the new draining paving, making the proposal more sustainable. The conserved part of the track is used as a square and the traces of the painted lines are preserved. Organic benches arrange in a sinuous way the boundary between the square and the new recreational areas while trees and shrub species allow to enjoy the passing of the seasons and nourish the visual landscape from inside the classrooms.
