Intro

About

In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

New Access to the Historical Centre of Gironella

The historic centre of Gironella is located on the east bank of the Llobregat River, 20 metres above the modern part, which has grown on the other side of the river. Difficulties of accessibility have led to the depopulation of the old town and we therefore propose to insert a new access that enhances connectivity between the two parts. Seeking to establish a dialogue with the pre-existence, we located the lift at a strategic point on the Cal Metre road, the old access to the textile colonies. We recognise the vegetal stratum of the promenade as an element of relationship with the public space and seek material continuity with the industries. The structure is made up of pillars and tubular rings. The lower 8 metres of the lift shaft are resolved with a glass enclosure, the transparency of which guarantees integration with the Cal Metre promenade. The upper 16 metres are covered by a ceramic lattice, leaving the inner face open to maintain visual contact with the vestiges of the medieval wall during the journey.

  4. Cal Metre Path

Carles Enrich Studio, Carles Enrich Giménez

    Cal Metre Path

With the installation of the lift that connects the difference in level between the two parts of Gironella, the Cal Metre path becomes a new daily route for the town's citizens and requires redevelopment. The proposal aims to recover the promenade as a space for passing through and staying, recalling its use as an access to the textile colonies at the end of the 19th century. In addition, the aim is to include the area of this old path in the public space of the town, which will become a new area to stay in and contemplate the river landscape where various events such as fairs, shows and other possible activities linked to the industrial warehouses can be held. The project enhances the existing trees, mainly banana trees. A central strip of acid-washed concrete and 60% of permeable surface is planned around the perimeter. The limits with the edges are softened by a greenway with 5 and 15 cm joints that act as a transition and protection. Along the promenade, there are five carpets paved with cobblestones reused from old streets in the old town of Gironella, with an open joint, which make up the sitting areas, always associated with an existing tree and two concrete benches. The existing fence has been removed and a metal round railing has been installed to provide transparency towards the views and the river.
  5. Recovery of the Tower of Merola

Carles Enrich Studio, Carles Enrich Giménez

Recovery of the Tower of Merola

To the south of the municipality of Puig-reig, the remains of the castle of Merola are found. They date from the end of the 13th century and are catalogued as BCIN. According to the evidence, due to the earthquakes that struck Catalonia in the 15th century, only one of the sides of the defence tower, originally rectangular in plan and measuring 5 x 3.8 m and 14.8 m high, remains standing. The detachment of part of its crown in 2016 put the Puig-reig Town Council on alert. The high risk of demolition, with the consequent loss of the monument, requires an intervention that guarantees the preservation of the remains and that recovers the building for the town, boosting the attraction of possible visitors. In order to achieve these objectives, two basic lines of action are proposed: on the one hand, the consolidation of the remains that have survived and, on the other, the reinforcement of the medieval structure. This reinforcement is configured by means of a wooden structure with 18 14 cm square section profiles that follow the perimeter of the stone wall and which, in the form of scaffolding, allows the structural stabilisation of the pre-existing wall, recovering the original volumetry and re-establishing its function as a point of observation and defence of the territory. The new structure resolves the functional conditioning factors of reinforcement and establishes a relationship of dialogue with the existing stone wall, highlighting the new intervention with regard to the original. The missing foundation was recovered with lime concrete and the two structures were tied together by means of wooden profiles anchored to the stone wall at 14 points. The insertion of an internal staircase provides access to the 3 original circulation levels while facilitating the future maintenance of the monument. The ascent to the upper level of the tower recovers a viewpoint that has been inaccessible since the 15th century.
