Intro

About

In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

  1. Immaculada Dwellings

Estudi Massip-Bosch Arquitectes (EMBA), Horacio Osvaldo Espeche Sotailo, Enric Massip-Bosch, Joan Sabaté Picasó

    Immaculada Dwellings

It is a unitary proposal for two separate blocks, which enclose the same square and are subject to the same urban planning conditions. The dwellings adopt current typologies, although the two skins, the front and the rear, are configured in relation to the context: the boundary of the city centre and, therefore, the façade of historic Manresa. The rear façades recover the traditional galleries, while the front façades, in accordance with current regulations, adopt a rhythm of tall, narrow windows that allow the unevenness between the two blocks to be articulated, between the old houses on both sides.
  2. Bosch i Jover Secondary School

Estudi Massip-Bosch Arquitectes (EMBA), Enric Massip-Bosch

    Bosch i Jover Secondary School

The site for this refurbishment and extension of the secondary school is on the edge of Artés, an area still in the process of consolidation, where large facilities and isolated single-family homes predominate. The new building is designed as an organic extension of the original 1970 square-plan school. The available site was very small. Only after the building was finished was an additional site annexed to expand the sports area. The main decision was to locate the entire educational programme on the first floor of the existing building, leaving the lower levels for the complementary programme: administration, dining hall, gymnasium, etc. In this way, internal communications between the two buildings are optimised and a single functional organism is obtained. A large open porch connects the two buildings and links them to the playing fields. Due to the shape and location of the site, the new building has east and west facing facades, which are not the most advisable for a school. Hence the importance of the sun protection elements, which respond to the need for light control and at the same time contribute to the final image of the building. They are more densely located on the west side, where greater protection is required, and less so on the east side. This difference also reflects the different programmes on each side: the standard classrooms, which are used for longer, more numerous and smaller, are located in the east, while the specific classrooms, which are larger but used more sporadically, are located in the west. The position of the programme generates a dual volumetry that responds to the different conditions of the context: it generates a continuous façade open to the fields, while on the street side it is fragmented into volumes of a similar size to the houses opposite and relating to the old school.
  3. Sabadell Primary Healthcare Centre

Estudi Massip-Bosch Arquitectes (EMBA), Enric Massip-Bosch

    Sabadell Primary Healthcare Centre

This Primary Healthcare Centre is located next to another existing municipal facility, being the north façade of Castelao Square. It takes the alignment and the general volumetry of the square to generate a coherent façade in the public space and reinterpret the porch of the existing building in a large overhang that facilitates the relationship between the interior and the exterior and between the equipment. One of the project’s main goals was the definition of the standard organisational type and to achieve a model of general application. The program is distributed over two floors that correspond to two parts differentiated in use and character: on the upper floor all the consultations and waiting areas are located; on the lower floor, access, emergencies and the rest of the program are established. Both landings can operate independently at different times. The regular distribution of the upper floor is dynamised and hierarchised by the irruption of the lighting and ventilation courtyards of the lower floor and the vertical cores, so that differentiated zones are generated that correspond to the different medical specialties. Despite this spatial classification of the plant, the transparency of the interior courtyards allows for a global perception and facilitates users' orientation.
  4. Carles Rahola Secondary School

Estudi Massip-Bosch Arquitectes (EMBA), Enric Massip-Bosch

    Carles Rahola Secondary School

  5. Diagonal Zero Zero

Estudi Massip-Bosch Arquitectes (EMBA), Enric Massip-Bosch

    Diagonal Zero Zero

The position of the Diagonal Zero Zero Tower is exceptional because it is located at the start of the Diagonal, Barcelona’s main avenue, as well as being located on the border of the Forum’s larger areas by the sea. Tailored to house the Telefónica Group's corporate headquarters and its main global R&D departments, it is a contextual building with a symbiotic relationship with the environment. It is a trapezoidal prism, sharp and stylised, light and whitish in colour, which takes advantage of the shape of the solar diamond. Through the extra clear glass of the curtain wall, dynamic volumes that respond to the different specificities of the interior program are revealed, and they are related to the various heights of the nearby buildings. The standard office floors are open, taking advantage of the structural system of the tower: a central core of support and a perimeter structure along the façade allow a floor which has no pillars.
  6. Marta Mata Infant and Primary School

Estudi Massip-Bosch Arquitectes (EMBA), Enric Massip-Bosch

Marta Mata Infant and Primary School

The school completes a housing development of single-family homes, taking on the role of a public building that provides structure, and defines a large façade as the end of the central axis of the neighbourhood, where the primary school entrance is located. The accesses to the nursery and primary school are located at different levels, taking advantage of the topography of the site. The nursery is located on the lower level, with direct access to the open inner courtyards, and the access to the primary school is located one floor above, where the main playground of the centre is located. The programme is organised in a very compact way, freeing up as much of the not very large site as possible. The teaching spaces are located on either side of the central corridor, which is punctuated with openings that illuminate it and generate informal spaces for interaction. The entire construction is industrialised: structure, panels, windows and solar protection. The centre has been built quickly and with better control of the finishes. The façade panels are a proprietary design that improves the quality and performance of this type of element.
