Intro

About

In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

  1. Doctor Roure House

    Ignasi Mas Morell

    Doctor Roure House

House surrounded by a garden which preserves its original structure, located in front of Passeig de Mar. It consists of a ground floor, main floor and attic. It is covered by a roof in which there is a small attic. The decorative elements are of a Catalan Art Nouveau style, and all the openings are decorated with coloured terracottas that give it a stately character.
  2. Public Schools in Sant Pol de Mar

    Ignasi Mas Morell

Public Schools in Sant Pol de Mar

Large building with an irregular floor plan. It has a longitudinal body and in the corner there is a floor finished with a roof of glazed tiles and a turret with a conical roof which stand out. The whole complex is full of Catalan Art Nouveau style details, such as the ceramics that decorate it, the glazed roof tiles, etc.
  3. Villa Elena

    Ignasi Mas Morell

    Villa Elena

House with a rectangular plan forming a partition with No. 10 of the promenade, carried out by the same architect. It is surrounded by a garden with a fence made of masonry, with stone and mosaic, with bars at the top. The finish of the building, completely free of composition, stands out. On the one hand, there is a small rooftop covered by a wooden roof and supported by four vertical and completely free columns that extend it above the stone and mosaic roof. On the other side, there is a small loft-style building. It follows the roof with another fully open rooftop. The windows do not follow a certain style, each one has its own. Stone work and mosaic everywhere. Islamic influences are present, as in the free-angle Muqarna. House also known as Casa Anzizu, promoted by Josep Mª Anzizu i Morell. It was located in Carrer Balmes no. 16, pral., Barcelona, at the time the municipal building license was applied for (7/6/1911).
  4. Clock House

Gaietà Buïgas i Monravà, Ignasi Mas Morell

    Clock House

The Clock House is one of the most characteristic buildings in Sitges, and it stands on the corner between Carrer Major and Carrer A. Vidal and opens onto the Plaça Cap de la Vila, to whose configuration it makes a decisive contribution. It is a large building between partitions, with a ground floor, three floors and a roof with a sinuous railing. It is accessed through three doors, two of them located on Carrer Major and Carrer A. Vidal, and the third and main door on the square. The distribution of the rest of the openings, which are generally rectangular, is rectangular. The most remarkable part of the building is the one on the corner with Carrer Major, which has a wooden tribune on the first floor and, above all, an overhanging tower, where the clock that gives the house its name is located and which ends in a spike covered with a mosaic of white, yellow and blue tiles. Overall, the decorative elements play a very important role in the external appearance of the building: ceramics, iron and sgraffito, although the latter are quite damaged. The Clock House, known as "Casa del Rellotge" is located at Cap de la Vila, where in the 17th century there was one of the six gates of the new wall of Sitges. This area was reformed according to the initial project by Gaietà Buïgas i Monravà, approved on 17-6-1889 and carried out with many modifications by Ignasi Mas i Morell in 1913. In December 1912, permission was requested for the construction of the building. The project was presented in May 1913 and was approved by the Town Council. The work was completed in 1915 – the date that appears sgraffitoed on the corner of Carrer d'Àngel Vidal.
  5. Old Canals i Nubiola Winery

    Ignasi Mas Morell

    Old Canals i Nubiola Winery

Set of underground galleries built at different constructive times. The old Canals i Nubiola wineries are built under the urban centre of Sant Esteve Sesrovires and are considered the oldest underground quarries in Catalonia. The wineries are still in full operation. The construction of the old cellars of the Canals family began in 1860. That year, the construction of a cellar began under the country house-residence of the Canals family, which is located on Carrer Major, on the corner with the current Carrer de Martorell. This cava, named Sant Jordi, began to be produce champagne in 1882. Near his residence, known as Can Canals, Magí Canals had a piece of land with porches and patios located on the same block. On the other hand, according to Llorenç Oller i Bultó's project, in 1875 Magí Canals i Ferrer decided to build in front of his house, on the other side of Carrer Major, an enclosed courtyard with an installation for producing cava and a cellar. Years later, in 1890, Isidre Capellades Goulart sold some land adjacent to the Goulart family's garden to Josep Canals i Nubiola, who then commissioned the construction of cellars from the Barcelona builder Josep Bou Estruch. Bou had arrived in the town to work on the construction of the new parish church. A kilometer of galleries were excavated 30 metres deep. In 1914, the Can Canals underground quarries were extended. The Can Canals house already had underground galleries intended for aging and preserving the wines from its own harvest (cave). It became necessary to extend the wineries, and the yard that the owner deposited on the other side of Carrer Major, known as "Clos de Can Canals" was used to build the extension of the underground galleries. To pass from one building to the other, it was necessary to cross the main street in a straight line across its entire width, at a minimum depth of 8 m. According to the project, the gallery had to have a height of 3 m and a maximum width also of 3 m and the walls, vault and floor had to be covered with brick and cement. In 1920, the new modernist cellar was built, coinciding with one of the heyday of the cellars. In 1988, an expansion of the facilities was carried out with the "Proyecto de Ampliación de la Industria de Elaboración de Vinos Espumosos" located on Carrer Major 3, in the same place where the "Clos de can Canals" was built ", as well as the construction of a new connecting tunnel. The name of the Roger Goulart cava company combines two of the most representative lineages of Sant Esteve Sesrovires: the Goularts, or Gulart, and the Canals. The first were originally from the French Basque Country and arrived in the town at the end of the 18th century (a branch of the family founded Can Golart d'Esparreguera).
  6. Arenys Market

    Ignasi Mas Morell

    Arenys Market

Large exposed brick and stone construction, with a staircase and a curved entrance porch. Deck with iron horses. Interior of a single nave divided into three streets - as many as entrance doors - to facilitate the compartmentalisation of the stops. In the centre, where Carrer de les Margarides would cross the premises, the fish stalls are set up in a roundabout. The side windows provide lighting. Large central window on the façade at floor level, above the porch. Ornamentation with tiles and mouldings on the stone elements located on the plinth, at the beginning of the entrance arches and on the pinnacles. Postmodernist work. It is located in a central place in La Riera, near the church square, it stands out from the whole because of its size and the empty porch, despite following the same façade alignment of the neighbouring houses. In recent years, the municipal broadcasting station was installed on the empty porch, on the first floor.
