In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.
The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.
The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.
Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.
The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.
The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

L'habitatge que Tous i Fargas van projectar per a José Mestre estava situada a la finca "El Migjorn", a la Platja Rovira de la localitat costanera de Santa Cristina d'Aro. El projecte estava profundament condicionat per la situació paisatgística i topogràfica del lloc, una preciosa cala costanera pràcticament verge en l'època en que va ser construït l'habitatge. La parcel·la tenia una forma irregular, amb el seu costat sud-est orientat directament a la platja. L'accés principal al recinte es realitzava per la part nord del solar, des d'una carretera que conduïa directament a un primer cos construït destinat a garatge. Aquest cos es connectava al volum principal, funcional i formalment, mitjançant un doble pas cobert. Un d'aquests passos conduïa directament a l'accés principal a la planta superior de la habitatge, que es desenvolupava en dos nivells. A la planta principal es situava el vestíbul i la sala principal, al costat d'una cuina amb accés de servei. A l'àrea més privada d'aquesta primera planta es situava un dormitori principal amb vestidor i un dormitori d'hostes, a més d'un petit espai d'estudi directament comunicat amb l'escala d'accés a la planta inferior. Un buit acompanyava a l'escala configurant un espai en doble alçada al voltant d'una sala de jocs amb barra de bar. La planta inferior es completava amb altres dos dormitoris dobles i la resta de dependències de neteja i servei. També se situava en aquesta planta un espai destinat a l'emmagatzematge d'una embarcació, amb sortida directa a la platja. La planta superior gaudia d'una generosa terrassa orientada al mar, sens dubte un dels espais privilegiats del conjunt. L'ocupació del solar sembla ser una de les principals preocupacions dels arquitectes. El garatge permetia equilibrar un primer desnivell del solar amb la parcel·la confrontant. El conjunt edificat es situava a la part més alta de la propietat, amb les millors vistes cap al mar. No obstant això, l'impacte volumètric era molt poc significatiu, gràcies a la coberta envoltant que a més estava revestida de grava, mimetitzant-se amb l'entorn. Es proposaven diferents murs de pedra, que no només dibuixaven el contorn del solar, sinó que s'integraven amb la solució topogràfica resolta, colonitzant l'entorn i definint el jardí principal. De la lectura de les diferents propostes que els arquitectes van desenvolupar per a l'habitatge al llarg de diversos mesos, es percep sempre l'interès per alliberar d'edificació la part més plana del solar, i a més la més propera a la platja. El primer projecte data de 1954, mentre que la construcció de l'habitatge principal va finalitzar el 1956. En la primera versió del projecte es proposava un accés secundari a la parcel·la des del costat oest, que incloïa un passeig i una pèrgola fins a l'habitatge, finalment no executat. D'altra banda, el 1961 s'aprovava un projecte per a la reconversió del garatge en habitatge del guarda i per a la construcció en dues fases d'un nou accés i garatge, una altra vegada en la cantonada oest del solar. En aquest cas, la posició del nou volum responia més a una justificació superficial que paisatgística. Es configurava un volum en L que ocupava els límits del solar, del qual només sobresortia un volum prismàtic longitudinal en planta primera. A més de la consideració prudent dels elements estructurals, Tous i Fargas van incloure a la Casa Mestre un mural de Jorge Fornas, mostrant la seva atenció a aquesta informació dels projectes de Seidler (i que perllonga l'interès per la integració entre l'art i l'arquitectura que vèiem en el capítol anterior). La connexió entre els cossos d'habitatge i garatge, així com la definició d'una secció que mostra la continuïtat entre els dos volums principals de la casa Mestre és també un tret identificable en diversos dels projectes de Seidler. El fet és que la casa Mestre va ser l'eclosió d'una sèrie de cases de maó i teules que Tous i Fargas estaven projectant o ja s'havien executat, curiosament en la mateixa àrea geogràfica: la rehabilitació de la casa de Robert Ruark, la casa d'Alan Ritchie (de la qual no es conserva documentació per fer una anàlisi més profunda), o la casa per a Juan Huguet a Lloret de Mar. Un altre cas similar era el de la Casa Fargas, en aquest cas a la localitat de Pollença, a Mallorca. -

After several versions, the ground plan was defined as an irregular hexagon, formed by the perimeter union of the double hexagon proposed in a previous version. The program consists of four bedrooms, a living room, the kitchen and the toilet, with independent uses. The entire program is on the first floor, which is accessed through a staircase located in the centre of the floor, and whose body is the only support for the entire building. In the construction plan, a mixed structure was proposed, consisting of a metal skeleton, vertical planes built with a double sheet of ceramic work, and horizontal enclosures with brick vaults of ceramic plane. The use of any of these elements may seem contradictory, especially the combination of the light metal structure with the heavy enclosure of the factory. This suggests that the original intention was probably the placement of prefabricated enclosure elements, as can be inferred from the modulation of the façade. All in all, the final solution involves the combination - at least original - of traditional construction elements included in a totally innovative structural system. The body of the central staircase included six perimeter pillars (in an equidistant position with respect to the centres of the two theoretical original hexagons) on which the entire construction rested. The rest of the metal structure, built using UPN and L profiles, was arranged in the form of a double bracket, in such a way that a large part of the load was transmitted in traction from the braces arranged at the top of the pillars.Banca Catalana

The project won a restricted competition called by Banca Catalana, and the decisive element of this choice was undoubtedly the solution of the façade. Because it would be a representative building located on one of the most emblematic promenades in the city, the image that the building had to offer was involved with the architecture of the environment and with the demands of the institution. Formed by a combination of glass locks and paraboloid-shaped plastic pieces, the façade builds a strictly two-dimensional plan that reflects all the aesthetic potential required. Tous and Fargas innovate the concept of the façade, built with pieces that are assembled as a device that closes the building like the fairing of a car. They later applied the same criteria in other office buildings, offering many variants. It is also worth noting the structural solution, reduced to a cantilevered structure that leaves a single row of pillars, which in turn leave the large beams that cross the different floors visible.FAD Award

El caràcter principal de l'edifici resideix en l'astuta síntesi de les escales que planteja l'operació arquitectònica: de la casa a la ciutat. Alguns aspectes que ho posen de manifest són la reculada de les plantes baixes -al mateix estil d'Eugène Hénard a París- que dota el conjunt d'un cert pintoresquisme i els diferents graus de privadesa de les vies, des del carrer públic, al passatge i al pati interior jardí. Tot això juntament amb la sàvia articulació del bloc lineal que aspira a generar una configuració de mansana urbana oberta al carrer. El projecte de Tous i Fargas ha de ser identificat a l'escala urbana. L'ordenació de l'illa i el model d'agrupació responen a la idea de construcció orgànica de la ciutat. La reculada entre habitatges a favor d'una alineació esglaonada havia estat recurrent en els projectes d'habitatge col·lectiu des de la Cité Moderne de Victor Bourgeois a Brussel·les (1922-1925), o en els seus homònims nòrdics, de la mà d'Arne Jacobsen i les agrupacions de habitatges Soholm (1950-1955) o Jørn Utzon i les cases Fredensborg (1959-1965). D'altra banda, l'aposta tecnològica dels autors en els primers anys d'exercici professional sembla canalitzar-se cap al rigor domèstic dels últims, en una aposta clara a favor de la reformulació del bloc i les seves tipologies com a models de l'hàbitat obrer dels anys seixanta.Rehabilitation and Remodelling of Estació del Nord Railway Station
