About

In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

Memory

Treballa durant del curs dels seus estudis als despatxos de Manuel Ribas Piera, MBM i Josep Acebillo entre d’altres. Arquitecte per l’ETSAB l’any 1982, ingressa un any abans a l’Ajuntament de Barcelona a l’equip del Servei de Projectes Urbans de nova creació de la mà d’Oriol Bohigas.

L’any 1989 inicia els seus treballs de restauració al Monestir de Pedralbes pels quals rep conjuntament amb Pere López Íñigo el Premi Ciutat de Barcelona l’any 1991 per la restauració del Dormidor. Des de l’any 1993 exerceix d’arquitecte conservador del Monestir de Pedralbes. Fins a l’actualitat compagina la seva activitat professional a l’Ajuntament de Barcelona amb el seu despatx propi.

La seva obra estat premiada i publicada en diferents ocasions, d’entre les quals destaquen la remodelació de la Via Júlia (finalista premis FAD 1986), el Premi Delta de Plata ADIFAD, de disseny industrial, a l’aplic “Macaya”(1990), la restauració del Vapor Vell de Sants (1999- 2000) i la rehabilitació de l’Antiga Fàbrica de Can Surís a Cornellà (Premi Bonaplata 2009 i Premi Urban Land Institute). Els projectes més rellevants sobre els que treballa en l’actualitat són la nova construcció del Parc Maresme Circular a Mataró dedicat a l’impuls i difusió de l’economia circular i la construcció del Nou Centre Penitenciari Obert de Tarragona.

Ha impartit classes a l’Escola Elisava, a l’ETSAB i a l’Escola d’Arts i Oficis de Vic i ha participat en diferents ponències organitzades pel COAC, el MUHBA i la Diputació de Barcelona. És autor de diversos articles sobre intervenció en patrimoni històric.

    Rehabilitation of the Vapor Vell de Sants

    Background The complex has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest by the Generalitat de Catalunya. It corresponds to an industrial construction from 1840, and only the main part formed by a central body of 5 floors and two lateral bodies of 4 floors has survived to this day. The building is built on the basis of corroded masonry foundations, perimeter load-bearing walls of masonry factory work and solid brick, and pit pillars in the central part. These support composite wooden beams and metal braces, which supported vaults in the Catalan style. In the lateral bodies, the forgings are made of wooden beams of different sizes and corbels, also of different sizes. Description. The project contemplates a neighbourhood library in the old Vapor Vell de Sants building, sharing space with a 2-line school. The library, with access from the body that leads to Joan Güell Street, occupies the 3rd and 4th floors, and the school, with access from the other building closer to Galileu Street, occupies the ground floor, the 1st and 2nd floors. It has a patio in the outside area that overlooks Miracle Street.

    The old Can Surís factory was built around 1897 and is listed in the Architectural Heritage Protection Catalogue of Cornellà de Llobregat, due to its historical and typological value. It is located in Plaça de Can Surís, s/n in Cornellà de Llobregat, next to the old road that linked the towns of Cornellà de Llobregat and Sant Joan Despí, in an area of recent urbanisation and remodelling, with the passage of the new TramBaix train. The building was unoccupied and abandoned, empty of any type of pre-existing facilities, and in a process of accelerated degradation due to lack of maintenance. The work was carried out in three phases between 2001 and 2009. The first phase included the complete refurbishment of part of the structure, the façades and the roof, and the renovation of another part of the structure, to be used as a public facility, but without a clear specific programme. This first project included new vertical communication spaces – main staircase, lifts and emergency stairs –, services and facilities for an unspecified programme, but which required a high degree of flexibility on the different floors. The second phase developed the programme of use on the ground and first floors, with the necessary interior fittings, as well as the specific fixed furniture. The project envisaged the provision of the necessary spaces to develop the programme of the new Citizen Innovation Centre for the Knowledge Society, in its sections: social dissemination-dissemination (ground floor), polytechnic learning-development (first floor) and finally digital-media realisation-production (second floor), which would be executed in the third phase. This programme called for a high degree of flexibility on the different floors in order to be able to adapt over time to the introduction of new technological developments. The access was reinforced with the construction of a double-height linear porch attached to the main façade that allows a friendlier reading of an industrial building, while serving as a filter between the activity container and the exterior access and leisure space. This steel and glass pergola contrasts with the solid brickwork and gives the building a new, more contemporary image; its placement reinforces the reading of the building and responds to the new use for which it is intended. The entrance leads to the foyer which is developed in the triple height of the building. This way, on entering, the character of the JOSEP M. JULIÀ public building is recognised and the magnitude of the three floors of the new centre can be glimpsed. The third phase of the refurbishment of the former Can Surís factory included the completion of the complete refurbishment of the second and ground floors, in terms of the interior divisions, services, finishes and all the installations necessary to use it for the extension of the Citilab-Cornellà public facilities. The project for these upper floors developed the new digital art programme in its realisation and production sections, and includes two sets of different sizes for multiple uses.

    The Treasures of the Monastery

    Located in the heart of the monastic complex of Santa Maria de Pedralbes in Barcelona, the assignment pursued the adaptation of the old Dormitory in order to host the new permanent exhibition of the Monastery’s Museum. First of all, it was necessary to redefine and improve the exhibition narrative because, after 12 years of research, new data had already been discovered about the exhibited pieces that required updating the content of the same. Secondly, the Queen’s Room had to be emptied and freed in order to host temporary exhibitions. Finally, the old Dormitory had to be able to host chamber music concerts, at least a couple of times a year; a requirement that forced the dismantling of the current distribution that had a central separating wall. It was proposed that all the new elements added to the original nave echo, above all, the austerity and simplicity present in all the spaces of this monastery dedicated to Santa Clara d'Assisi, and tend, as much as possible, to go unnoticed. All the walls would be painted gray in harmony with the colour of the Sant Vicenç stone pavement, defining a neutral and restful environment in which to display the pieces. All the paintings would be hung at exactly the same height, as well as the accompanying posters. All pedestals would be constructed of the same grey lacquered panels and on them – wherever necessary for safety reasons – minimal chrome display cases would be placed. A distribution of the same would allow the works to be grouped within the space, facilitating a differentiated reading of both the container and the content of the exhibition. At the entrance, a white square would be painted as an accent to indicate the beginning of the exhibition route, emulating a large-format painting. A new metal door would be installed to be able to physically segregate the Queen's Room from the Dormitory and, at the end opposite the entrance, a 7m long bench upholstered in red velvet would be placed that would allow the visitors to rest.
