Intro

About

In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

Chronology (5)

  1. Barcelona Hotel and Novedades Theatre

Lluís Cantallops Valeri, Francesc Mitjans Miró, Miquel Ponsetí i Vives

Initially, Ponseti was commissioned for the performance hall and an office building with a curtain wall, but after a short time it began to transform into a project with several clients and several architects. First, Mitjans informed him of the commission for a hotel that would replace the offices. A little later, Cantallops commissioned the one in a parking lot that was half below the theatre, and later an architect from Madrid a luxury shirt shop on the ground floor of the hotel. Miquel Ponseti began to project the current theatre, that was surprising for its modernity, since it broke with the traditional schemes of performance halls. The concrete structure allowed the stalls and the amphitheatre to be larger than normal and the visibility to be perfect from any seat. The hotel's façade stands out, which is a cantilevered concrete frame with an upper and a lateral glass strip with terraces. The rest of the façade consists of a checkerboard of opaque panels and floor-to-ceiling windows. During the process, Mitjans designed a prototype room and had it built life-size with all the finishing touches. Since he didn't like it, he had it torn down to build the final version.
  2. Barcelona Swimming Club

    Miquel Ponsetí i Vives

    Barcelona Swimming Club

At the end of 1964, the Barcelona Swimming Club decided to entrust Ponseti with the new expansion and remodeling works, which consisted of demolishing the central body of the old facilities and constructing two new buildings. The first is a volume that is attached to the building of the old swimming pool of l'Escullera, after demolishing and rebuilding the existing stands, and contains the adjoining sports facilities. The second is a volume that goes forward towards the sea and contains the bar and the social and administrative areas. In 1981, Ponseti would carry out the project for a new extension, although he would not build it himself. The two Ponseti buildings are attached to the complex already built and constitute the new sea front. They are two reticular structures of reinforced concrete, raised from the ground and supported by V-shaped pillars that provide great visual lightness to the complex and reinforce the feeling of continuity of the beach sand. The upper part of the social building contains a solarium that is defined by a cantilevered reinforced concrete box. Each of the façades incorporates different sizes of openings and formal treatments that enrich the complex and contextualise the different elements.
