Intro

About

In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

  1. Police Region and Police Station in Tortosa

Josep Benedito i Rovira, Santi Orteu Palou

Police Region and Police Station in Tortosa

  2. Museum of Ethnology and World Cultures

OP Team Arquitectura, Josep Benedito i Rovira, Xavier Farré Riba, Santi Orteu Palou, Glòria Piferrer i Cabezas

Museum of Ethnology and World Cultures

The Museum of World Cultures is located on Montcada Street, currently the most important nucleus of medieval civil architecture in Barcelona, listed as BCIN. It occupies two Gothic buildings, listed as BCIL, and known as Palau Marqués de Llió and Palau Nadal. The important historical and artistic component of the palaces, and the desire to make it compatible with the exhibition and museum content frame and define the character of the performance. Respectful and discreet with the character of the spaces and historical elements, but without false mimicry and assuming without complexes the condition of contemporaneity of an intervention of this type. The works have involved a strong intervention of reform and adaptation, to the new use of the buildings, to the current regulations, to the requirements of the museum proposal, renovation of the facilities, structural reinforcement of walls and slabs, restructuring of circulations and spaces, to the delicate restoration of the Gothic beams present in some of the rooms.

  4. Miquel Batllori Library

OP Team Arquitectura, Xavier Farré Riba, Santi Orteu Palou, Glòria Piferrer i Cabezas

    Miquel Batllori Library

The library occupies the ground floor of a residential building in a newly built neighbourhood. The proposal pursues two objectives: to make the equipment visible and dignified from the outside and to convert three unconnected premises with complex geometry (in plan and section) into a single area with spatial and environmental continuity inside. On the façade, the unifying treatment integrates the shop windows and entrances to the homes under the eaves, giving dimension to the whole and allowing the library to be traced from the surroundings. Access is from a renovated sloping patio that leads to the interior through a dematerialised gate. The open ceiling turns it into a space of its own. The entire building can be seen from the lobby: reception area, reading rooms, children's area, classrooms, offices, Living Lab... The skylight becomes the protagonist of the space and backbone of the library. A few closed spaces and the use of colour make it possible to stress the dimensions and fix the nature of the environments.
