Intro

About

In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

Memory

It was the first factory of the Asland company, founded in 1901 by the industrialist and patron of the arts Eusebi Güell. It began operating in 1903, and was the first factory in the country to produce Portland cement. It is a staggered or ‘cascade’ arrangement on the right bank of the source of the Llobregat. This layout favoured the production process, due to its proximity to the points where the raw material was exploited, and also made it possible to take advantage of the river's hydraulic energy. The factory operated on the normal principle of gravity. At the top, marl and limestone were collected from the quarries located further up, and at the base the final product was obtained. Guastavino used Catalan vaults with tie rods, with spans of 12 metres. A small narrow-gauge railway, with tracks 60 centimetres wide, connected the factory with Berga and Manresa. The factory closed in 1975.

Industrial building with a very irregular floor plan that takes advantage of the uneven terrain and has a balanced system of proportions between all parts of the building. The entire building is covered with a flat brick vault, a system in which Rafael Guastavino - author of the project - specialised. With the use of brick for the vaults, iron and cement, it constitutes an exceptional example of industrial architecture at the beginning of the 20th century, never abandoning a very personal aesthetic and a good distribution of volumes and the play of curves (given by the vaults and semicircular windows) and straight lines.

The Clot del Moro cement factory was the first plant on the peninsula dedicated to the production of Portland cement. It was promoted by Eusebi Güell and Bacigalupi, the first Count of Güell, who founded the company. ‘Compañía General de Asfaltos y Portland, S.A. Güell chose this land near the Fuentes del Llobregat because of the possibility of using the limestone impregnated with bituminous materials, which was optimal for obtaining Portland cement. The factory obtained the concession of a waterfall on the river Llobregat and, from 1914, its own railway line from Guardiola de Berguedà. Eusebio Güell was the real driving force behind this project, as well as other industrial activities such as the Gü colony.
