Intro

About

In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

  1. Plaça Espanya Dwellings

Bonell i Gil Arquitectes, Esteve Bonell i Costa, Josep Maria Gil i Guitart

    Plaça Espanya Dwellings

The project occupies the northern half of Plaça Espanya in Sabadell. The proposal follows the General Plan which defined a linear block of 14m depth and a height of ground floor and 7 floors. The geometry of the curved blocks, of excessive depth, was resolved with recesses in the concave façade facing south and by creating tensions in the corners, which assume their greatest urban complexity. Two houses per landing with ventilation on two opposite façades. The domestic space is solved with all the rectangular pieces, accumulating the angular deviation due to the curvature in the living room. Facilities and services are grouped together, and a certain constructive dignity is achieved despite the limited surface area and budget module.
  2. Can Brians Prison

Bonell i Gil Arquitectes, Esteve Bonell i Costa, Manuel Brullet i Tenas, Josep Maria Gil i Guitart, Francesc Rius i Camps

    Can Brians Prison

To build a prison is to build a closed world, as were abbeys, monasteries or ancient acropolises. In the image of all of them, a prison is a small abstract world, located in a rural environment where 1500 people live and work. Human relationships, personal and collective interactions and, ultimately, a strong relationship between man and space appear. It is about creating a "city" on virgin land, taking into account geographic and landscape considerations to achieve a good implementation, but above all, it is about solving the highly complex programmatic aspects where control and security issues are prioritised. Urban situations similar to, but not equal to, those of the traditional city are considered. Here the square is not a meeting place, the street has more of a sense of separation than of communication, and in the façades seclusion is more important than the communication between interior and exterior.
  3. Girona Law Courts

Bonell i Gil Arquitectes, Esteve Bonell i Costa, Josep Maria Gil i Guitart

    Girona Law Courts

  4. Vila Olímpica Dwellings

Bonell i Gil Arquitectes, Esteve Bonell i Costa, Josep Maria Gil i Guitart

    Vila Olímpica Dwellings

The new Olympic Village neighbourhood allows the opening of Barcelona to the sea, as well as the organization of the coastal area following the city’s traditional morphology (closed blocks) but with a current look. The new neighbourhood results from the overlaying of different architectural projects, subjected to a General Plan designed by Oriol Bohigas. Our project is located within the block of flats bounded by Litoral Avenue, Arquitecte Sert Street, Icària Avenue and Poble Nou Street. The project is based on pre-existing singularities; a mandatory section in front of Litoral Avenue, a porch with gabled roof, a circular square (tower), an interior space with towers, the presence of bridges and brick as the main material. The solution adopted consists of 170 homes along with commercial premises and car parks. Despite the different urban situations – linear block, corners, mandatory section, isolated spaces inside the block – the main feature was to give a unitary image to the whole building complex. All this takes place in a context of low pricing, labour problems and speed of execution. To achieve this, only two types of housing were chosen (2 flats per landing plus the triplex in the linear flats), as well as the same construction and façade material criteria. With the aim of always resolving privacy, protection and communication with the exterior, the different façades/buildings have different formal treatment, depending on the orientations and/or urban situations. The rear façades and part of the isolated buildings start from the 1m sliding window that unifies openings (bedroom, kitchen and laundry room). Regarding the rest, an opening to the exterior is not chosen, instead, there is a double façade created as a filter or as an intermediate space between the inside and the outside. Nonetheless, the aim to solve dimensional problems of scale is also present, in addition to solving the possible symmetries and repetitions due to the addition of equal parts and their adequacy to the exterior.
  5. Sports Pavilion and Rowing Workshop in Banyoles

Bonell i Gil Arquitectes, Esteve Bonell i Costa, Josep Maria Gil i Guitart

Sports Pavilion and Rowing Workshop in Banyoles

  8. Houses in Vallvidrera

Bonell i Gil Arquitectes, Esteve Bonell i Costa, Josep Maria Gil i Guitart, Desirée Mas

    Houses in Vallvidrera

These two single-family houses, despite being two different projects, were built around the same time in Vallvidrera, and with similar design intentions. The steep slope on both sites meant that the homes were thought of on staggered levels, which allowed them to open up to good orientation and views. At the same time, these are two isolated buildings, whose volumetrics partly. respond to the pre-existing buildings that surround them. The primary difference between both projects lies in the façade material, white stucco in one case, exposed brick in the other.
  9. Citadines Aparthotel

Bonell i Gil Arquitectes, Esteve Bonell i Costa, Josep Maria Gil i Guitart

    Citadines Aparthotel

The construction of an aparthotel on the Ramblas in Barcelona poses the challenge of inserting current architecture in a site with strong historical and formal conditions. Two volumes linked through a body with a ground floor and a mezzanine with a commercial passageway order the construction of the irregular plot with façades facing Las Ramblas and Vila de Madrid Square. The building on Las Ramblas assumes the inequality of the heights of the neighbouring partitions and the presence in one of them of the portico of the "loggia" of the old Moja Palace. The low height of the portico and its status as a listed building made it possible to use what should have been a dividing wall as a new façade that rotates and faces the neoclassical façade of Moja Palace, enjoying magnificent views over the roofs of the old town.

  11. Ciutadella Campus of the UPF

Bonell i Gil Arquitectes, Esteve Bonell i Costa, Josep Maria Gil i Guitart

    Ciutadella Campus of the UPF

The project tries to resolve the difficult balance between two opposing worlds. On the one hand, the conservation of an old building with severe lines and strong urban implantation, programmed for military activities; on the other, the change of use to a building intended for departmental activities of the University, with the following criteria: 1. Conservation of the exterior façades with the specific modification of the new access. 2. Transformation of the area of the patio and porches into a space of interaction. 3. Changing the patio windows of 1'20x2'10m for ones of 1'80x3'60m, which allow the ventilation of two overlapping offices. 4. Construction of a basement floor under the old courtyard, where the library is located, which is a "cloister" inside another cloister, with the central area lit by skylights.
  12. Indústria Social Housing

Bonell i Gil Arquitectes, Esteve Bonell i Costa, Josep Maria Gil i Guitart

  14. Tecla Sala Dwellings

Bonell i Gil Arquitectes, Esteve Bonell i Costa, Josep Maria Gil i Guitart

    Tecla Sala Dwellings

Construction of 150 homes that represent a new front that acts as an intermediary between the immediate urban fabric and the park. A set made up of five isolated and equal buildings, arranged regularly. These blocks clearly indicate the limit of the park and with their alignment they support the urban condition of the street. On the other hand, the gaps between the blocks allow permeability between the street and the park. The trapezoidal floor plan means that all homes have a good view of the green space. The change in elevations in section seeks the appropriate scale of the homes with respect to the park and the Carrer Canigó façade.
  15. Dwellings and Offices in Sarrià

Bonell i Gil Arquitectes, Ribas & Ribas Arquitectes, Esteve Bonell i Costa, Josep Maria Gil i Guitart, José Ribas Folguera, José Ribas i González, Francesc Rius i Camps

    Dwellings and Offices in Sarrià

THE DWELLINGS They are part of a set of buildings intended for housing and offices resulting from the transformation of the old grounds of the R.C.D. Espanyol Football Club. The project arises from the definition of a homogeneous urban piece, but which responds to different volumetric conceptions with different housing options. Large blocks of flats and small multi-family housing buildings provide the appropriate response to the volume of the buildings in the General Mitre Ring Road, Ricardo Villa or Dr. Fleming. THE OFFICES Two buildings, with the 54-metre-high tower taking centre stage, are the reference element on Sarrià Avenue. They are very simple buildings in which the concentration of services allows open floor plans that allow for different distributions of offices. The glazed treatment of the façades, with solar protection overhangs, makes the buildings appear with a great feeling of lightness and transparency.
  16. Atrium Cultural and Sports Amenity

Bonell i Gil Arquitectes, Esteve Bonell i Costa, Josep Maria Gil i Guitart

    Atrium Cultural and Sports Amenity

The complex not only has to consolidate an urban space but completes a large sports and cultural area started with the construction of the new football field. The project consists of a swimming pool, sports centre, theatre and bar-restaurant. Each space functions independently, with both structural and spatial autonomy, but subject to a general order with the aim of giving a unified image to the whole. A longitudinal lobby is proposed, which absorbs the entrances of each of the areas, allows a good view with a single daily access control and at the same time has the appropriate dimension to be able to respond to specific demands of a large influx of public.

  18. New Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau

Bonell i Gil Arquitectes, Silvia Barbera, Esteve Bonell i Costa, Josep Lluís Canosa Magret, Josep Maria Gil i Guitart, Francesc Rius i Camps

New Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau

The new Hospital de Sant Pau is located in the northern triangle of the historic site dominated by the constructions made at the beginning of the century by the architect Domènech i Montaner. The topography and the different urban limits pose two situations: the current entrance to the hospital that faces the Eixample and the Sagrada Família, and the proposed building that faces the layout of the Ronda del Mig. The new hospital consists of two clearly differentiated areas. One contains the program for services and the other one for hospitalisation, linked together by an "intermediary" that acts as a hall. The service building has a façade and is supported on Mas Casanovas Street, assuming the role of building as a plot boundary. The hospital area is formalised as "fingers" of a hand that are inserted into the green space that separates it from the old hospital, achieving a smaller scale of the building and a subtler relationship with the old pavilions.

  20. Ciutat de Granada-Bolívia Housing for the Elderly, Social Centre and Primary Healthcare Centre

Bonell i Gil Arquitectes, Peris+Toral Arquitectes, Esteve Bonell i Costa, Josep Maria Gil i Guitart, Marta Peris Eugenio, José Manuel Toral Fernández

Ciutat de Granada-Bolívia Housing for the Elderly, Social Centre and Primary Healthcare Centre

The priority of the project is to make the differentiated operation of the spaces of the building and their fit in the particular urban volume of the environment compatible. In a broad view of the territory, the relevance of the plot to 22@ requires the construction of a building for the 21st century Barcelona, in an area of the city that changes the traditional volume of the Eixample. In a closer look, the building will be part of an attic in which the formal prominence of the Agbar tower is imposed and the presence of two more buildings, the volumes of which, as in the neighbouring attic, are not continued on the Diagonal Avenue’s façade and are presented as detached buildings oriented on the sea-mountain axis. From a functional point of view, the building must assume the programmatic complexity, through a unitary building and accommodate three entities of different consideration (primary medical centre, social centre and sheltered housing), where the public or private character are issues to consider. We propose a unitary building, a mixture of different volumes. A two-storey plinth supported on the streets of Ciutat de Granada and Bolívia, contains the outbuildings for the primary medical centre and the social centre, and at the same time will support the three volumes for housing. Its distribution in the form of a fan is essential to solve the sun of the houses and to understand and complete the plot. Thus, the new building, despite its smaller size, is not only able to "rebalance" the prominence of the Agbar tower within the plot, but, through the sequence of voids and full, manages to establish a dialogue with the buildings of the neighbouring plot. The order of the façade continues to disappear, and a volumetric "new order" is imposed, permeable between the street and the interior of the block.
