Intro

About

In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

Chronology (7)

  1. Les Roquetes Library

Soldevila Soldevila Soldevila Arquitectes, Alfons Soldevila i Riera

    Les Roquetes Library

The first part of the order is the rehabilitation, extension and conditioning for library use of an existing facility, work of the architect Marcià Codinachs in Via Favència, in an urban section enabled on the roof of the Ronda de Dalt in Barcelona. The second part of the project consists of the urbanisation of the adjacent spaces, in particular the area between the two existing buildings, where the main access that turns this space into a large outdoor hall open to the city is located. It is a neighbourhood library with a public area at the level of the access street where the spaces intended for the children's area, computers, daily press, training and study classes are located. The program is organised between the existing building and a new annex building, adjacent to the old one and connected to it through a multipurpose transitional space. On the ground floor, taking advantage of the slope of the Ronda de Dalt, are the meeting room with independent access and the internal work area. The structural approach of the extended building, conditioned by the delicate situation of the site (above the cover of the ring roads), is solved with a steel structure in the form of a bridge, on three benches supported on existing factory work, with lights of close to 15 metres. This structural principle allows open spaces with natural lighting that provide the complex with a great environmental quality. In the existing building, running longitudinal skylights, oriented to the north, provide constant homogeneous light and are at the same time the support of a photovoltaic installation. The general image of the exterior aims to be very aggressive and monolithic, with forceful and clear geometries, in contrast to a warm environment with great acoustic and visual comfort inside. This effect is achieved with the treatment of the materials used, enhancing their characteristics and their own expression: "Corten" steel on the outside and light woods (birch) on the inside. The annex building is a rectangular "Corten" steel body that is suspended and separated from the existing equipment. This new space opens to the east with a large double-height window and a sloping sky that accentuates the effect of perspective and focuses the vision on the city, while it is completely closed to the noise of the side streets. The main façade, made of perforated "tallin" sheet metal, allows you to play with very variable light gradients depending on the time of day and night, becoming a completely transparent filter or an absolutely opaque screen. The library has become a meeting point and point of reference in the neighbourhood due to the forceful and easy-to-read geometries on the outside and the very clear organisation of spaces and routes inside, where the materials used and the scale provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
  2. L10 Metro Stations: Llefià, La Salut and Gorg

Soldevila Soldevila Soldevila Arquitectes, Alfons Soldevila Barbosa, David Soldevila Riera

L10 Metro Stations: Llefià, La Salut and Gorg

The Gorg, La Salut and Llefià stations belong to the metro line built with a tunnelling machine that runs at depths of up to 60m underground. The La Salut station goes down to 34m and the Llefià station to 54m. The stations deal with two essential aspects: reducing the effect of claustrophobia and counteracting that of vertigo in the descent shafts on the platforms. The strategy adopted to minimise these sensations is to fragment the space horizontally. Claustrophobia is solved retro lighting the walls and making the space seem breathable. The sensation of vertigo in the well is softened by a sequence of walkways lit as if they were the balconies of a theatre, fragmenting the view towards the hole. The pavement of the catwalks is made of perforated hot-galvanised steel sheet, providing different qualities of light. The stations have an anti-vandal metal finish made up of perforated or embossed sheet metal panels, which also offers a unified image to the interior spaces.
  3. Alta Alella Wine Tourism Centre

Soldevila Soldevila Soldevila Arquitectes, Alfons Soldevila Barbosa, David Soldevila Riera

    Alta Alella Wine Tourism Centre

Situation. The centre is located in a valley, between the municipalities of Tiana and Alella, in the Alta Alella Project wine estate. The main objective was the construction of a wine tourism, reception, tasting and sales centre. It is a reference building integrated into a privileged landscape, surrounded by vineyards and with views over the Mediterranean. The building is arranged on an old agricultural pond, where, while taking advantage of an existing adjoining beam, a cover is supported on a large wooden deck. A green cover in the central part and vine or pergola at the ends, which qualifies with different degrees of shadow and textures, as well as with different spaces. It is a building made with very few resources which aims to integrate and collect the essence of the place (Maresme), of the land (granite), and of the product that is produced there (wine and cava). Goal. Provide a background where you can enjoy and taste good wine surrounded by vineyards.
