Intro

About

In this first stage, the catalogue focuses on the modern and contemporary architecture designed and built between 1832 –year of construction of the first industrial chimney in Barcelona that we establish as the beginning of modernity– until today.

The project is born to make the architecture more accessible both to professionals and to the citizens through a website that is going to be updated and extended. Contemporary works of greater general interest will be incorporated, always with a necessary historical perspective, while gradually adding works from our past, with the ambitious objective of understanding a greater documented period.

The collection feeds from multiple sources, mainly from the generosity of architectural and photographic studios, as well as the large amount of excellent historical and reference editorial projects, such as architectural guides, magazines, monographs and other publications. It also takes into consideration all the reference sources from the various branches and associated entities with the COAC and other collaborating entities related to the architectural and design fields, in its maximum spectrum.

Special mention should be made of the incorporation of vast documentation from the COAC Historical Archive which, thanks to its documental richness, provides a large amount of valuable –and in some cases unpublished– graphic documentation.

The rigour and criteria for selection of the works has been stablished by a Documental Commission, formed by the COAC’s Culture Spokesperson, the director of the COAC Historical Archive, the directors of the COAC Digital Archive, and professionals and other external experts from all the territorial sections that look after to offer a transversal view of the current and past architectural landscape around the territory.

The determination of this project is to become the largest digital collection about Catalan architecture; a key tool of exemplar information and documentation about architecture, which turns into a local and international referent, for the way to explain and show the architectural heritage of a territory.

  1. MR-1 Houses

Miquel Donada i Gaja, Josep Maria Massot i Beltran, Alfons Soldevila Barbosa

    MR-1 Houses

It is an economic construction made with non-economical materials, with which maximum performance has been sought. They are two juxtaposed parallelepipedal modules, with a base of 4 x 16 metres and respective heights of 8 and 9 metres, which enclose a volume of more than 500 cubic metres per module. The execution was quick, achieved with unskilled labor, thanks to the simplicity of the openings. Within each envelope it is possible to find a wide variety of interior solutions according to needs, as well as a great mobility of the adopted solutions. Maintenance is much lower than usual.
  2. La Muntanyeta Residential Complex

Josep Ignasi de Llorens Duran, Alfons Soldevila Barbosa

    La Muntanyeta Residential Complex

The six houses respond to a clear and simple construction procedure, in which each element acts independently and with great flexibility. The structure is always based on exposed concrete block walls, with visible installations located on the exterior walls. The basis of the constructive simplicity is the modulation of the concrete block, the volumetrics and the distribution of the houses and the independence with which the constructive elements are treated. The box, slabs, roof, partitions, carpentry, installations and finishes hardly interfere with each other, which clarifies the work of industrialists, simplifies repairs and allows great flexibility for the user. The block and its modulation result in a rigorous execution of all elements. Quality and not cheapness is not derived from this constructive simplicity.
  3. L10 Metro Stations: Llefià, La Salut and Gorg

Soldevila Soldevila Soldevila Arquitectes, Alfons Soldevila Barbosa, David Soldevila Riera

L10 Metro Stations: Llefià, La Salut and Gorg

The Gorg, La Salut and Llefià stations belong to the metro line built with a tunnelling machine that runs at depths of up to 60m underground. The La Salut station goes down to 34m and the Llefià station to 54m. The stations deal with two essential aspects: reducing the effect of claustrophobia and counteracting that of vertigo in the descent shafts on the platforms. The strategy adopted to minimise these sensations is to fragment the space horizontally. Claustrophobia is solved retro lighting the walls and making the space seem breathable. The sensation of vertigo in the well is softened by a sequence of walkways lit as if they were the balconies of a theatre, fragmenting the view towards the hole. The pavement of the catwalks is made of perforated hot-galvanised steel sheet, providing different qualities of light. The stations have an anti-vandal metal finish made up of perforated or embossed sheet metal panels, which also offers a unified image to the interior spaces.
  4. Alta Alella Wine Tourism Centre

Soldevila Soldevila Soldevila Arquitectes, Alfons Soldevila Barbosa, David Soldevila Riera

    Alta Alella Wine Tourism Centre

Situation. The centre is located in a valley, between the municipalities of Tiana and Alella, in the Alta Alella Project wine estate. The main objective was the construction of a wine tourism, reception, tasting and sales centre. It is a reference building integrated into a privileged landscape, surrounded by vineyards and with views over the Mediterranean. The building is arranged on an old agricultural pond, where, while taking advantage of an existing adjoining beam, a cover is supported on a large wooden deck. A green cover in the central part and vine or pergola at the ends, which qualifies with different degrees of shadow and textures, as well as with different spaces. It is a building made with very few resources which aims to integrate and collect the essence of the place (Maresme), of the land (granite), and of the product that is produced there (wine and cava). Goal. Provide a background where you can enjoy and taste good wine surrounded by vineyards.
